The end of 2019 is here. The 2020 school year is upon us. The end of the 2019-2020 school year will be here before you know it. What this means is time seems to pass so quickly. It is sometimes hard to keep up with your child’s special educational programming, instruction, placement, and services. This may be good time to assess your child’s educational progress at school and determine what changes, if any, you want to make to your child’s IEP. I often receives calls and emails from parents who want to convene an IEP meeting to make mid-courses changes. The school system is required to convene an IEP meeting annually . . . but that does not means you have to wait until the annual meeting until the IEP team reviews your child’s IEP. You can request an IEP meeting at any time. Sometimes events during the school year trigger a request for an IEP meeting such as disciplinary actions, suspensions, lack of educational progress, new evaluations and diagnoses, or change of school districts. There are many reasons why you may want to request an IEP meeting before time of the annual review.
If you want to request an IEP meeting before the end of the 2019-2020 school year – other than the annual IEP meeting – then this may be a good time to do it. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s educational programming, instruction, placement, and services. I am available during the school year to attend IEP meetings for parents any where in the state of Georgia. I have attended IEP meetings in every geographic area of Georgia . . . urban, suburban and rural school districts.
In the meantime, I wish you a very happy holiday season.
